Teeth Whitening Q & A
What Causes Teeth to Look Dingy or Stained?
There are two types of tooth discoloration. External discoloration, which is the most common, is usually the result tobacco products and foods and beverages that contain dark pigments, such as coffee, tea, red wine, blueberries, and foods with artificial and natural food colorings. Even some dark or brightly colored spices can be associated with staining. Foods and drinks like citrus fruits, energy drinks, and sodas can temporarily soften enamel and make it easier for stains to penetrate. Poor oral hygiene habits can also cause teeth to look dingy and gray, and, or course, simple aging is a culprit. This is partly why white teeth make people appear more youthful. Our teeth whitening kits are highly effective in correcting external discoloration. Less common is internal discoloration, which occurs as a result of changes in a tooth’s enamel or dentin. Causes of internal discoloration include certain medications, trauma or a root canal. Internal discoloration usually requires correction with other veneers, bonding or crowns.
